Workshop Track III: Tuesday July 27th, 2:15 PM -- 4:15 PM
Meeting the Needs of Single Parent Families: A Fresh Perspective
The number of single parents is consistently on the rise. Several new and existing non-profit agencies are attempting to assist single parents and their children but are meeting with significant obstacles-some traditional and some unique to their lifestyle-that are making it difficult to meet that need. This session will discuss these issues and how these agencies can work together to combat these obstacles AND WIN!
Advocating for the Elderly
There was a time where the most immediate problems facing the elderly were inadequate healthcare and the fixed-income blues. Today, many members of the elderly population are faced with not only these challenges, but others such as domestic abuse and grandparents raising grandchildren. Who are their champions? What programs and services are currently in place to meet their needs and how well are they working? What other types of services are needed? This workshop will feature a panel of experts in the field to discuss these issues and provide insight into how your organization can best effect positive changes for the elderly in your community.
TechSpeak 101
Computer technology advances so rapidly that it is sometimes difficult to grasp everything you need to know. From understanding all that computer jargon to finding the most affordable computer system or Internet solution for your community technology center, non-profit organizations often find that they don't have enough knowledge to make technology decisions best-suited to their work environments. Further, how do you find the funding for your community technology programs? This workshop will educate participants in these key areas while providing useful technology benchmarks that can be implemented to make your computer center successful.
Community Development and the Church
With increased support for faith-based community initiatives, many churches previously interested in increasing their outreach efforts are now encouraged to do more. But how do churches begin to focus their outreach programs to better meet their community's needs? What strategies can they employ to assess these needs and set attainable goals to reach them? How do churches and their community development corporations (CDCs) connect with potential partners to expand current efforts without compromising spiritual principals? This workshop will explore the answers to these questions with the help of an experienced panel of directors from various church CDCs around the state.
The Disability Factor-Making a Positive Difference
How far have we as a society come in meeting the needs of persons with disabilities? What has been the non-profit organization's role in empowering them to rebuild their lives so they can become self-sufficient? What basic elements and potential challenges must be considered to implement a successful community program for persons with disabilities, and what benchmarks are important to evaluating these community programs for current and future progress? This session will explore the answers to these questions; providing helpful insights to those organizations seeking to broaden the scope of their outreach programs to serve clients with disabilities.
